The Latest Smartphone Innovation is Coming from Amazon?

Yes,  you read that right. This time it’s not Apple or Samsung. It might be Amazon that develops the next cool smartphone if a report by The Wall Street Journal is true. Apparently, according to a mystery source that has knowledge of the goings-on of Amazon, the company is developing two Smartphones and one device similar to an iPod that would play streaming content. That content would undoubtedly come from Audible.com which is, of course, owned by Amazon.

According to The Wall Street Journal report, using retina-tracking technology, images on the smartphone would seem to float above the screen like a hologram and appear three-dimensional at all angles, [sources] said. Users may be able to navigate through content using just their eyes, two of the people said.”

Sound pretty space age? We’re not quite to the stage of a holographic image standing on your phone talking to you but controlling your phone with your eyes? Now that’s cool! A whole lot more interesting than a battery which has become the new way of innovating your smartphone lineup–at least if you’re Apple or Samsung.

But don’t get too excited too soon. These products are only in the development stage and there’s talk that they may never see the light of day due to cost and performance issues.

Which will we see first? The Apple TV or the Amazon mystery phone?

Disclosure: At the time of this writing, Tim Parker had no position in any of the stocks mentioned.
