Woman Dies Taking Call on iPhone 5

According to Reuters, a 23 year-old woman died from electrocution after answering a call on her iPhone 5.

Ma Ailun, a 23 year old flight attendant reportedly had her phone plugged in and charging. After picking up her phone to take an incoming call, she collapsed and died, according to her sister. Apple will investigate the cause of the accident.

In an e-mailed response to Reuters, a company spokesperson said,

“We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family. We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter.”

The company suffered a blow when Chinese media criticized Apple’s warranty policies in April. This caused two weeks of negative press for a company trying to repair a tarnished reputation.

Apple is rumored to be working on a low-cost iPhone, in part, to spur demand in China, Japan, and other Asia-Pacific countries where cheaper, budget-minded phones are driving demand more than premium model phones.
