Apple Acquires Locationary

AllThingsD is reporting that Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) has acquired Canadian startup, Locationary .

In an undisclosed deal which recently closed, Apple acquired the small Canadian startup which includes its technology and team in what is surely an attempt to compete with Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) in the map space.

When Apple released its map app, it didn’t take long for users to see that there were major issues. Roads would suddenly end, landmarks were distorted, and the quality of information was far below that of Google Maps.

The app is much better than it was but as Google also continues to evolve in the map space, especially after its recent acquisition of the social mapping app, WAZE, Apple has done little to narrow the gap.

Locationary solves a key problem with mapping data: the timeliness. Not only does it continually verify that the data is positionally accurate, it constantly verifies that the business is still open, for example.
