DirecTV to Time Warner: ‘Go Get ‘Em’ (CBS, DTV, TWC)

Directv (NASDAQ: DTV) and Time Warner (NYSE: TWC) aren’t in the habit of sending eachother well-wishes but in Time Warner’s dispute with CBS (NYSE: CBS) DirecTV is encouraging it to hold fast and stay strong.

“DirecTV has certainly had its share of these battles, so we applaud Time Warner Cable for fighting back against exorbitant programming cost increases. We are also appalled to learn that CBS is now punishing DIRECTV customers, who may happen to have Time Warner as their Internet provider, by denying them access to CBS content online,” the company said, saying the efforts of content companies to extract “outrageous fees” from distributors may have reached “a new low.”

There’s every reason to believe that DirecTV is sincere in its well wishes since a perceived win by Time Warner would give the cable and satellite companies more leverage for future negotiations but it also knows that the longer Time Warner cable annoys customers by not airing the nation’s top rated network, the higher the chance that those customers will look elsewhere.

DirecTV execs are surely saying behind closed doors, “better them than us.”
