CBS Renews ‘Under the Dome’ for Summer 2014

CBS (NYSE: CBS) announced Monday that it will renew the summer’s highest rated series, “Under the Dome” for the Summer 2014 season.

CBS Entertainment President, Nina Tassler said that it would purchase 13 more episodes. She said:

“We’re excited to tell more stories about the mystery of the dome and the secrets in Chester’s Mill, and are thrilled to have the master storyteller himself, Stephen King, tell the first one of next season,”

The series, which was a departure from the network playbook of not spending big on summer programming has proven to be a huge success. It is averaging 13.84 million viewers, 3.5/10 in adults 18-49 and 4.8/12 in adults 25-54. It’s also receiving a significant amount of viewing through DVR playback and on Amazon Prime.

CBS is spending between $3 million and $3.4 million per episode along with a hefty marketing budget. The studio also sold the digital rights to Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) for what is reported to be high six figures per episode.
