Acadia Research Corporation up 5 Percent After Settlements (ACTG)

Shares of Acadia Research Corporation (NASDAQ: ACTG) were up 5 percent in late day trading after the company announced that it had entered into licensing agreements with VMware Inc. (NYSE: VMW), Estech Systems Inc., and American Medical Systems, Inc. along with other announcements.

In a series of press releases, the company said its subsidiaries had settled pending litigation with VMware, Estech Systems and American Medical Systems. The press releases provided no further detail.

In addition, the company announced that one of its subsidiaries had acquired the rights to a patent portfolio covering ink jet printer and ink jet printing technologies along with other portfolio acquisitions.

According to the releases,

“Acacia Research Corporation’s subsidiaries partner with inventors and patent owners, license the patents to corporate users, and share the revenue. Acacia Research Corporation’s subsidiaries control over 250 patent portfolios, covering technologies used in a wide variety of industries.”

The company has been characterized as a patent troll among some intellectual property insiders sometimes referred to as “the mother of all patent trolls.”
